La pandemia de la COVID-19 será recordada en la historia de la humanidad como uno de los hitos más significativos del siglo XXI. Los controvertidos orígenes del SARS-CoV-2, su alta capacidad de contagio, su irrupción mundial, el desconocimiento inicial de su patogenicidad, sus altos índices de mortalidad, la carencia de tratamientos eficaces, o el colapso de los sistemas de salud, incluso en los países más avanzados, han sido cuestiones, que llevaron a la comunidad sanitaria internacional con la OMS a la cabeza, a recomendar una serie de medidas sanitarias drásticas, y a los gobiernos de los respectivos países a decretar el confinamiento estricto de la población, una situación impensable en la actual era tecnológica. The controversial origins of SARS-CoV-2, its high capacity for contagion, its worldwide outbreak, the initial lack of knowledge of its pathogenicity, its high mortality rates, the lack of effective treatments, and the collapse of health systems, even in the most advanced countries, were issues that led the international health community, led by the WHO, to recommend a series of drastic health measures, and the governments of the respective countries to decree the strict confinement of the population, an unthinkable situation in the current technological era. This book reflects some of the milestones in biotechnology, biomedicine and bioinformatics, which have been the key to tackling the countless challenges posed by the pandemic, especially those related to the development of effective treatments and vaccines.
