The goal of "Forum" is to enable students to speak Latin as a living language. Studies have shown that unless one speaks, reading fluency becomes difficult to attain. Because it teaches students to speak Latin, Forum prepares them to read without the use of dictionary or translation, and to read as fluently as one might read in any modern language.

"Forum" applies to Latin the teaching methods commonly used for modern language acquisition: total oral immersion, total physical response (TPR), role-playing games, gradual complexity of dialogues and stories, and gradual grammatical progression.

Whether used by students on their own or by an instructor with a group, this first-level book submerges the student within the language. The audio files that are available for free download on the Polis Institute website will help the student to internalize grammatical forms and vocabulary. As only the Latin language is heard by the students using these files, they are unable to rely on an intermediary language and are thus compelled to employ the new skills they have acquired through this text.

"Forum" teaches Classical Latin in the broadest sense. The classical period includes the golden age of Latin literature (1st c. BC ? 1st c. AD) as well as the Imperial Latin from the Nerva-Antonine dynasty (96-192 AD) and the Severan dynasty (193-235 AD). This period has the advantage of being an intermediate between pre-Classical Latin and Late Latin (3rd c.-6th c. AD). Even authors from the 4th or 5th centuries AD such as St. Augustine of Hippo or St. Jerome, albeit writing in a slightly different language than the classical one, took the golden age of Latin literature as a reference. Studying Classical Latin (in the broad sense) allows us to easily read the most interesting Latin texts of Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

El objetivo de "Forum" es permitir que los estudiantes hablen latín como una lengua viva. Varios estudios han mostrado que, a menos que uno hable, la fluidez al leer resulta difícil de alcanzar. Forum enseña a los estudiantes a hablar en latín, de manera que los prepara para leer sin recurrir al diccionario o a la traducción, con la misma fluidez con que uno puede leer en cualquier idioma moderno.

"Forum" aplica al latín los métodos de enseñanza habituales en la adquisición de una lengua moderna: la inmersión oral total, la respuesta física total de Asher, la teatralización, la complejidad gradual de diálogos e historias y de los contenidos gramaticales.

Sea como método de autoaprendizaje, sea como libro de clase, esta obra hace que el estudiante se sumerja en el idioma. Los archivos de audio, disponibles para su descarga gratuita en la web del Instituto Polis, ayudarán al estudiante a interiorizar las formas gramaticales y el vocabulario.

Como los estudiantes solo escuchan latín en estos audios, no pueden recurrir a otro idioma vehicular y por ello se ven obligados a emplear las nuevas habilidades que han adquirido a través de este método.

"Forum" se ocupa del latín clásico en su sentido más amplio. El período clásico incluye la edad de oro de la literatura latina (s. I a. C. – I d. C.), así como el latín de época imperial de las dinastías antonina (96 – 192 d. C.) y severa (193 – 235), pero no se deja aquí de lado el latín tardío (ss. III a VI) de autores como San Agustín o San Jerónimo que, con sus particularidades, tomaron como referencia el período áureo de la literatura latina. El estudio del latín clásico, en su sentido más amplio, nos permite leer fácilmente los textos latinos más interesantes de la Antigüedad y de la Edad Media.
